A boot sector is information loaded on a computer hard drive that gives commands to the computer explaining how to preform the functions to boot up starting programs.   4. Interesting, but not entirely correct. A computer can start fine without a hard drive connected. The boot sector of a hard drive actually only becomes active after the computer has already started up hardware-wise (after the so-called POST). The BIOS then starts looking for a program or OS to load, so it checks the boot sectors of several connected storage devices (DVD-rom drive, USB port, etc). The boot sector contains information about what is on the drive. A disk drive that contains an OS but has an empty boot sector won't be used by the BIOS.
